Pathways to Belonging

Program Summary:

“Pathways to Belonging” is an innovative initiative designed to support newcomers and refugees in Canada as they navigate their new lives through a unique connection with the land and water. This program emphasizes embracing the winter season and understanding the rich Indigenous history of the land while fostering resilience and mental well-being through the practice of cold immersion.

Program Goals:

  1. Connecting with Nature: Participants will engage in cold immersion activities, experiencing the invigorating power of nature during winter. Through guided sessions in safe environments, newcomers will learn to embrace the cold, transforming it from a daunting challenge into a source of strength and empowerment.
  2. Cultural Understanding: The program provides insights into the Indigenous history and culture of the land. Participants will learn about traditional practices and the connections Indigenous peoples have with the waters and winter, fostering deeper respect for the land and its heritage.
  3. Mental Health and Resilience: Participants will explore mental health techniques rooted in cold exposure practices. They will learn to harness the benefits of cold immersion to enhance resilience, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mental well-being. Techniques such as breathwork, mindfulness, and cold-water dipping will be integrated into the program.
  4. Building Community: Through shared experiences in nature, participants will forge meaningful connections with each other, fostering a sense of belonging and community. This supportive network empowers newcomers and refugees to navigate challenges together while celebrating their unique journeys.
